the proposed new construction roadway will connect us 98 in gulf county with us 231 in bay county. the proposed roadway aims to alleviate EXISTING congestion, increase freight movement, and improve ACCESSIBILITY to coastal communities. the roadway also has the added affect of creating an alternative hurricane evacuation route; as well as providing a bypass around tyndall air force base allowing for increased security on the base.
in august of 2015 gulf county submitted a resolution supporting alternative 19; bay county followed suit in march of 2016. the project is still in the early phases, but with the counties in agreeance on the alternative, the florida department of transportation in conjunction with the federal highway authority are working to complete the final environmental impact statement and the project development and environmental study. Review of the initial plans shows approximately 100 parcels that will be impacted by the construction of this project.
